TSI SEATS
An in-house research project improving the long-distance economy air travel experience.
In the Aircraft Seat and Parts Design and Engineering Competition, held for the third time in the 2021-2022 academic year, three projects were awarded Honorable Mentions. One of the awarded projects is "TUVAL," designed by Şevval Özyurt and Tuğberk Çorbacı, students of the Industrial Design Department at Istanbul Aydın University's Faculty of Architecture and Design. The project aims to help airlines save on fuel and CO2 emissions and reduce their carbon footprint by producing durable and ultra-light seats made from recycled materials.

The TUVAL project redefines long-distance economy air travel by enhancing passenger space and sightlines within the cabin. The innovative design introduces a vertical structural 'spine' that separates the seat back and headrest from the main structure, significantly increasing cabin space and comfort. This 'spine' houses functional components like the tray table, storage space, and monitor, and facilitates easier aisle access.
The seat geometry allows for greater recline and improved legroom, ensuring passengers can stretch out comfortably. Key features include a dual-level tray table for increased knee space and additional storage to minimize in-flight movement.
Material innovation is at the heart of TUVAL. The carbon fiber structure is clad in recycled plastic with sunflower seed husks, and the covers are made from a recycled wool blend, enhanced by an air-supporting 'spacer mesh.' All aluminum parts are crafted from recycled aircraft aluminum, emphasizing sustainability.
The slim seat back design follows the natural curve of the spine, maximizing legroom and comfort. TUVAL's groundbreaking design offers a superior, eco-friendly solution for modern air travel, ensuring a more comfortable and sustainable journey.
